This is how I feel about my daily work; the work that brings home the bacon. Although I work for myself, the practice has been so long established (over 30 years in the game), that it is automatic. I get a phone call to do a job, I do the job, and I get paid. There’s no toil (although it wasn’t always this way), there’s no ulterior motive, i.e. I’m not trying to make something happen, I’m not trying to get something out of it. Instead, I know what I’m getting out of it — money. It gratifies me too, in different ways to my writing. I think that’s the secret, to get into the work for its own sake and just do it and see what happens.
