Thinking is hard. It takes energy to think, so most of us get swept away by the momentum of trends. We don’t like to think of our apparently volitional decisions being wrong. For the evolution of the organism, it’s not too difficult to see why we wouldn’t spend longer than we need to burning up glucose. Collectively the same thing can be said to apply for small groups of humans. For the survival of the group, members would do what’s best for the tribe or village. Modern industrial society is somewhat similar but obviously much bigger. The collective moving en masse the way we do can cause significant problems. I think this current version of human being will expire soon, say in the next 100 years or so. Like sheep off the edge of a cliff.
