Ok, this isn’t me but it sure feels like it
I’ve let myself go, time to sort things out…
Welcome to the Editor’s Journal; A daily thought on writing, the creative process, art, work, the world and how it all goes together. Every morning I rise between 5 and 6 am, I sit here in the quiet of my kitchen and I write whatever’s prominent. I have a bunch of article ideas saved, so I’ll either pull from them or write something new. I also write at larrygmaguire.com. I hope you enjoy the read.
I know the headline is a bit sensational, maybe even a little irresponsible, but I’m on a mission and I have a plan to do just that…
Lose 14 pounds in a week.
Why post this in Storymaker?
Well, because anything goes in The Editor’s Journal. It’s a journal after all. And because exercise, health and fitness positively affects cognitive performance I feel it’s relevant.
If the body is fit, the mind is fit.
I’ve always been in good shape, like six-pack kinda good shape. Running marathons and ultras, hitting the gym, flinging weights around.
Staying fit and maintaining a good physique has never been a problem, so I could say I’m fortunate.
I feel something strange when I push myself to my physical limits and only recently have I begun to understand what that is.
Anyway…
Over the last 2 years I’ve just been sitting around doing very little exercise. I’d get out here and there, do a run, lift a few weights, but by and large I’ve been a bit of a lazy bastard.
I’ve been eating whatever I want also and as such I packed on an extra 14 pounds (6.35 kg).
Now that might not seem like a lot to some people but it’s a lot to me. It’s all relative.
So it’s time this extra me fucked off with itself, and I’m going to share with you how I intend to do it.
How To Lose 14 Pounds In A Week
Health Note: Follow me if you want to, but please don’t attempt this without first seeing your doctor. If you are not physically fit enough or healthy enough to take something as radical as this on, you may jeopardise your health even further. I’m not responsible for you or your health, that’s your job.
The first thing you might be thinking is; how is it even possible to lose a stone in a week?
Well I don’t know if it is or not, I’m just giving it a go.
Last night I went for a run, about 6 miles. I’ve ran a lot of miles over the years so my body appears to remember how to do that without much drama. I was slow but I got around and felt good afterwards.
When I got back I looked in the mirror and I didn’t like what I saw. That’s not me I thought. I look completely out of shape.
I stood on the scales and the numbers confirmed what I had seen in the mirror - 88kg. That’s almost 14 stone. My fighting weight is about 80 kg to 82 kg.
Fuck that!
So I got on the Google machine and searched for “how to lose a stone in a week. Here’s what I found.

No milk, butter or fats.
NO EATING BETWEEN MEALS
Abstain from all not included in diet. Eat what is shown or go without.
ONLY DIET FOR ONE WEEK IN THREE — TWO WEEKS OFF
No substitutes allowed. The basis of the diet is chemical, not the quantities.
Lunch and dinner may be swapped but only on the same day.
The crash diet is apparently designed to assist those awaiting surgery lose extra weight fast. From the comments on the article results seem to vary but by and large people who tried it got good results.
Now, I should say here I’m not a fad diet type of bloke, I’m doing this as an experiment. My weight doesn’t go up and down like a yoyo and I don’t go from one fad diet to the next. When I’m on form I generally eat pretty healthily.
Fresh fruit and veg, lean meat, and complex carbs are normal. Junk food rarely if ever features in my diet. I don’t do fizzy drinks and don’t drink a lot of alcohol.
However I must admit I’m a bit of a demon for chocolate.
My body fat % currently is at 15% according to the scales I use, but I’ll take that with a pinch of salt. My guess is I’m nearer 20%. If I want to drop body fat when I’m working out I’ll eat paleo for a month or six weeks.
Paleo is very effective and helping shift excess body fat, so after the week is over I’ll revert to that. I’ll also be working out every day of the 7 days.
So now…
I’ll say no more about it until the end of the 7 days then I’ll post again and let you know how I did. And no I won’t be posting before and after pics so forget about that. But I will be straight with you and report the truth of how things go.
If you’re generally healthy and up for it, give it a go, let me know how you get on.
