Branding, for the vast majority of people and organisations, is all about creating a facade, a pretence upon which they can manipulate the public to buy shit they don’t need. I know that sounds populist, but it’s true. We have to go back to the birth of contempory marketing and public relations (otherwise known as propaganda), and the person regarded as the grandfather of the profession; Edward Bernays, to appreciate the accuracy of the above. He was a nephew of Sigmund Freud and learned first hand, how people like you and me tick.
It’s normal today for organisations to create a false picture of themselves in order to appeal to the masses. So much so that you and I can’t tell the fiction from reality.
“Your brand is not what you make up on the internet; your brand is quite simply who you are and the way you act”
Very true.
Branding, marketing, public relations; it’s big business, and it encourages truly creative people to sacrifice their integrity for the sake of applause. I think that’s a problem.
