After 17 years doing my own thing I took a management position in an engineering firm…9 months later I left. I just couldn’t hack not flying my own kite. The engineering stuff pays the bills now and I write any other time I can get… I wouldn’t have it any other way (for now).
I say do what you have to do to pay the bills, get that peace of mind. From there I think we can have the comfort to make our stuff from the right place. There’s no greater killer of creative energy than fear and dread of not being able to pay the bills, not being able to live. I know the feeling only too well :-)
As Creatives, We’ll Never Be “Secure”- that line reminded me of a book from my go-to dead guru.
“Tomorrow and plans for tomorrow can have no significance at all unless you are in full contact with the reality of the present, since it is in the present and only in the present that you live. There is no other reality than present reality, so that, even if one were to live for endless ages, to live for the future would be to miss the point everlastingly.” -Alan Watts, The Wisdom of Insecurity.
